Shawshank Redemption

I watched this movie for my film class. I was amazing and is also on the AMC 100 greatest movies. It is directed by Frank Darabont. It was released in 1994 on September 23. It is about 142 minutes long ( 2 hours and 22 minutes). This movie is rated R for violence, alcohol, smoking, rape (not actually seen), brief nudity,  lots of language, death, and suicide. Even though the movie is rated R, I think it is good enough for a 14 or 15-year-old.

Red

The movie is about a young banker by the name of Andy Dufresne, is charged with the murder of his wife and her lover. He is than sentenced to two life in prisons, one for each person killed. He is sent to Shawshank Prison for his time. While he’s there, he doesn’t try to interact with anyone. He is hated by a gang within the prison called the sisters. They rape and beat him up. One day he tries to talk to an inmate by the nickname of “Red”. Around the prison he is known as the guy who can get things like smokes and other things. He asks him to get him a rock hammer to carve his own chess set out of the rocks in the prison yard.

Tommy

While he is there he shows his banking abilities to help the guard captain to help him with the money he inherited and stop the IRS from taking any of it.  He gains a reputation around the prison and help all the guards with their financial troubles. The warden notices and had Andy help him make money off of cheap prison labor. He then lets him make a library for the prison, which helps the prisoners get high school degrees. A few years later a young man comes to the prison. Red starts to tell Tommy about Andy’s case and Tommy comes out with the truth that happened the night of Andy’s wife’s death.

The Warden

I absolutely love this movie and I think it deserves its place on the AMC’s 100 Greatest Movies. It was perfectly shot, the story moved along perfectly, and was just an amazing story to start off with, written by Stephen King. I definitely recommend this to anyone who loves a good classic movie.
